Another Perspective on Copyright

Posted by Lauren O Grady on July 1, 2008

I found this video on Fulltimecasuals blog and it really made me reflect on the discussions we have been having at Oz/NZ educators and through twitter on copyright and intellectual property.  I think it is a great conversation started and would love people to add their comments below.

That is an amazing video. I watched it about 3 times and each time I noticed a little more. It really made me think not so much about piracy but more about how the way we access, create and share ideas. It’s such a big issue but it’s like we have shut the gate after the horse has bolted. While guarding intellectual property and ideas is obviously important to those who create it I really don’t know how you truly contain it once it’s out there. Isn’t that in part why it’s there in the first place?. I think I er on the side of the being part of the rebellion. Is that wrong?

Great find for further conversation! I plan to incorporate into some staff development, as well as work with high school students. I still ’sit on the fence’ with this one and try to take that ‘middle of the road’ stance by promoting Creative Commons as an alternative. Unfortunately, unless we tip to the rebellion side, there won’t likely be a change in the law though and thus, continued confusion for folks who want to try to create, but also do the ‘right thing.’

I love it! Of course we need to have a pirate streak in us… that’s how society grows. All that stuff it mentions in the clip about how other industries have grown is so true. We need to stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us or we can’t evolve.

Look at the art movements of the early 20th century… each was a reactionary response to what came before it… unless artists are allowed to build on the the existing culture, nothing moves forward. It would be nice to think that the human race was innovative enough to continually pull new ideas out of our collective butts, but we aren’t… we need to build on previous generations of ideas, and evolve new concepts and cultural definitions for ourselves.
Yargh, we be pirates, and proud of it.

there is a place for respecting the law, and a place for breaking it when it’s just plain stupid. Best line in the clip was that bit where he said something like “it’s what I want, so as far I’m concerned it’s law”.

    Hi Lauren,
28 huh? 4 years older than my daughter LOL! But I hope in the virtual world age doesn’t matter. At least in the virtual world I can iron out the wrinkles and redesign the physical outline. :) But I digress. It seems that the leap you have taken in your working life has opened up a whole lot of wonderful opportunities for you in being able to strengthen and build better relationship with others. I really like the fact that you have set your goals at the personal level where listening and sharing with others is paramount. I like to think that is why I continue to try to be active in the environment. Sometimes when I’m sitting in my loungeroom late at night, by myself on the computer the thought comes, Is this okay? Is this a bit sad? Should I be working more on my IRL relationships? But then I remind myself that the relationships and friends I have found via my online life such as you, Chris, JohnP, Darrel (although I have known ictguy IRL for a long time), Helen, Sue, Anne (murcha), Jess and many others are ones that I know that if I had a question, or a problem that I wanted to discuss or something that I needed needed help with any one of them would be there in a flash to help out. And isn’t that what friends are? I hope like you that one day I will meet them in person. (Some I have, but most I haven’t) So thanks for your thoughts and I know that we will continue to be online friends. I want to meet you and other in SL soon. That’s my next goal. Yours in online friendship

This is a great clip and one that should be used to make people think about the copyright.

Great, I hadn’t seen the YouTube clip, just read the book. The message that the book highlighted most strongly to me was that creativity derives from remixing; social change has happened in the past by finding new solutions to old problems; we can’t use the same models anymore because they don’t fit the content. Creative Commons is the best thing to enter this arena, but BigEd and BigBusiness need to get on board.

The quote about graffitists and culture jammers “turning the corporate monologue into a dialogue” is interesting, and I think that we need to be teaching students to think critically about the ‘grey areas’, while instilling the value of ethical behaviour.
