6 Word Memoirs
Posted by Lauren O Grady on August 10, 2008
Today I came across this and just loved the power and simplicity of it. The idea is in the video below but I think it could be adapted powerfully to work with students on visual and written literacy. The first video is from the book which started it all. People submitted their six words stories via twitter and match with images from flickr. I would love to work with students on this idea where they take the images and match it to their six word story. I think it is an extremely powerful way to demonstrate the power of images and words. The second video is from a teacher who had a go with their students.
I would love to start up a channel or a site with students six word memiors and begin to celebrate students ideas and work. If you would like to be involved please comment below and we can begin to collaborate. I would also like to set up a movie of educators 6 word memoirs. I am currently working on my own and would love to work with others. Please join me and others in collaborating in this project at http://6words.wikispaces.com
I look forward to learning more from everyone. Here is my one I have put it on the wiki as well

I would love to be part of this. The thing I like in particular is not only the six words but the image that would go along with it. So it’s about visual and written literacy and if we include music it’s even more powerful. I also love the fact that it’s not dependant on age or tech skills. Any person whether 5 or 55 could be part of it.
Count me in Lauren. (and hopefully my P-10 kids & teachers)

Can you elaborate ore on how yo plan on collaborating? Our students at pic.org.au are very close to beginning their folios in earnest. It maybe better for me to add this into our curriculum next year?

Oh, and one of MY images is in the top video, I have no recollection of permission being asked for it’s use?

Great post. Loved seeing these examples. Please keep tweeting as you publish your own students’ work.

Great initiative Lauren
being in a South Australian government school, I can’t access http://6words.wikispaces.com/
I’m sure some great collaboration will occur at this site.
Last year my class and I negotiated a task based on the six word challenge given to Ernest Hemingway. I have pulled it up from the archives and it can now be seen on my personal but neglected blog.

This was the initial page with input from various educators and students at other schools. In the comments of this post you wuill see a libnk provided by Paul Doherty http://www.flickr.com/groups/visualstory/ further ustilising this idea … in fact it might be the same reference as above but I can’t view them at my school ieither

This is mainly our class ideas (many used my email address hence the repeated face!) and some added visitors.
We considered adding images (powerful visual literacy indeed!) but class consensus was no. Best wishes with the collaboration.

[...] Lauren O’Grady has decided to take an idea from the PostSecret site and have it grow amongst the educational community. She’s asking for 6 word memoirs that you can contribute with a picture or film. Take a look at Lauren’s site and help make it grow. I haven’t posted mine yet but I will! [...]

This is a fantastic idea. Creativity comes from having boundaries and constraints within which to work. Don’t be surprised if you get some amazing results with this.

I am very interested in this project! I think it is great for students to learn how to use a minimum of words that have the greatest impact rather than a ton of words that does not say much. Please count me in. My skype name is aprilpc if you want to connect that way. I also think it would be great to have classes that have participate meet via Skype to share their 6 words to compare.
